Spivak's
motto on music is "music without emotion is noise", which
is the philosophy he uses when buying records, programming sets,
and DJing. Although he enjoys music meant for the head and not the
heart, a track won't make it to his record box if it doesn't lift
his spirits, raise some hair, or make him smile. Breakbeat is music
that does all this for him and contains all the emotion he needs
to express himself through DJing.
Although
breaks are Spivak's current genre of choice, his fascination with
electronic music all started in the 1980's with the likes of Kraftwerk,
Devo, and Brian Eno. This fascination guided him through various
genres of music and eventually to artists like Underworld, Fluke,
Orbital, and the Chemical Brothers. One thing led to another and
he found himself in San Francisco in the midst of the rise and heydey
of dance music and the DJ in the late 1990's and the new millenium.
His
discovery of dance music in San Francisco began at a little house
music club called Liquid and eventually at the Wednesday happy hour
party phenomenom called Qoöl that's hosted by San Francisco
dance music artists, knob twiddlers, and DJs Jondi and Spesh. Spivak
immersed himself in San Francisco's rich and diverse dance scene,
frequently attending underground and club parties. After indulging
in countless parties and numerous DJ mix CDs, he succumbed to the
lure of the DJ and began concentrating more on the DJs' mixing skills,
music selection, and programming rather than dancing. Spivak soon
launched into his own foray into spinning, mixing, and programming.
He began playing trance, but quickly moved to driving, tribal and
progressive house. When the energy of the progressive house began
to mellow significantly, he found new and vibrant energy in the
breakbeat that was coming out of London. He began incorporating
breakbeat into his sets and gradually refined his sound into his
current blend of breaks infused with house elements that he now
plays.
Spivak
began DJing in 2000 and his skill as a mixer and programmer and
his ability to choose quality records developed quickly, making
him a reliable DJ that can energize a crowd on any given night.
As a testament to his ability, he's warmed the decks for the likes
of DJ Hyper (Killowatt), DJ Friendly (Fat!), The Scumfrog, Jerry
Bonham (SAW Recordings, Qoöl), and Spesh (Loöq Records,
Qoöl, Spundae). He's also been playing consistently in everything
from San Francisco's smaller DJ bars to its biggest clubs, such
as 1015 Folsom, and he enjoys playing in every setting. Afterall,
it's not the size of venue that matters to him, it's making people
dance.
Spivak's
breakbeat sound is always dynamic and full of energy. Strong, sometimes
funky, sometimes dirty basslines are at the heart of his records,
which also incorporate elements from tech and tribal house, techno,
and electro. A smattering of vocals add soul and dynamic builds
rouse the spirit.
In
addition to DJing, Spivak has been writing music since his early
teenage years. He took a hiatus from writing to focus on DJing,
but recently returned to writing original tracks. Keep an eye out
for these on the website and an ear out for them when he spins live.
Spivak
has recently moved to New York City and is looking forward to bringing
his brand of high energy, dirty, and funky breaks to dancefloors
in his new home.
